Overview

The subject of vaccinations evoke dramatic opinions in the medical community.  Some well-respected physicians have the utmost trust in the vaccine schedule advocated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the government of the United States.  Other equally well-respected physicians disagree vehemently with the aforesaid.

As the raising of the child is the responsibility of the parent, it is up the the parent to become educated about the pros and cons of the debate and come to a well-informed decision.

Blood Levels of Mercury Are Related to Diagnosis of Autism: A Reanalysis of an Important Data Set - Journal of Child Neurology, Vol. 22, No. 11. 1308-1311 (2007) - M. Catherine DeSoto, PhD, Robert T. Hitlan, PhD. Depart. of Psychology, University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa
Excerpt: "We have reanalyzed the data set originally reported by lp et al. in 2004 and have found that the original p value was in error and that a significant relation does exist between the blood levels of mercury and diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder.  Moreover, the hair sample analysis results offer some support for the idea that persons with autism may be less efficient and more variable at eliminating mercury from the blood."

Developmental Regression and Mitochondrial Dysfunction in a Child With Autism -
Journal of Child Neurology, Volume 21, Number 2, February 2006 - Jon S. Poling, MD, PhD, Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery
Johns Hopkins Hospital
Overview: This article showed that 38% of Kennedy Krieger Institute autism patients studied had one marker for impaired oxidative phosphorylation (mitochondrial dysfunction), and 47% had a second marker.
Excerpt:  "Children who have (mitochondrial-related) dysfunctional cellular energy metabolism might be more prone to undergo autistic regression between 18 and 30 months of age if they also have infections or immunizations at the same time."

Pediatric Vaccines Influence Primate Behavior, Alter GI Tissue - Hewitson, Wakefield, Walker & Colleagues, University of Pittsburgh, Thoughtful House, Wake Forest
Overview: Observed changes to behavior, brain morphology and gene expression in GI tissue in infant macaques exposed to the human-equivalent recommended in infant vaccines, including ones with thimerosal, relative to unvaccinated annimals.  Abstracts presented at IMFAR 2008.

Prenatal Methylmercury Exposure Hampers Glutathione Antioxidant System - Stringari et al - University of Santa Catarina, Brazil

Overview: Found that prenatal exposure to mercury results in lower postnatal levels of the critical antioxidant glutathione in mouse brain, demonstrating that prenatal mercury exposure can increase vulnerability of infants to postnatal insults that increase oxidative stress such as mercury. February 2008

Dysregulation of Dendritic Cells by Nanomolar Thimerosal - Pessah & Colleagues - UC Davis
Overview: Observed changes in calcium signaling in important antigen-presenting cells of the immune system from extremely small amounts in thimerosal. July 2006

Comparison of Blood and Brain Mercury Levels in Infant Monkeys - Burbacher et al - University of Washington
Overview:  Found mercury from thimerosal to persist in the brain at higher levels than from methyl-mercury. National Institutes of Health funded study August 2005

Neurotoxic Effects of Postnatal Thimerosal are Mouse Strain Dependent - Hornig, Chian & Lipkin - Columbia University
Overview: Mercury dosing of mice at 1990s immunization levels produced autistic-like symptoms in genetically susceptible mice. September 2004

Alterations in Methionine Synthase Pathway from Thimerosal - Deth & Colleagues - Northeastern University
Overview: Thimerosal at vaccine levels modified critical cellular functions, including growth factor signaling, DNA methylation and methionine synthase activity. April 2004
